A mathematical quiz

Postby FlowerPower » Thu Apr 14, 2011 15:53

In a forum I've seen this simple question: what's the result of this expression:

48/2(9+3) =

There was 15 pages of discussion :D

Now I'm curious what will be the response here.
Answer the poll and say why :)

For me it's 2

(9+3) = 12
2 * 12 = 24
48 / 12 = 2

But I don't remember if first 48 / 12 or 24 * 12^^

Its 288 becasue...

Actually the sum says:

48 / 2 * (9+3)

since / and * are equal in mathematical sentence therefore the first one in the line-up should be done first.

so first 48 / 2 = 24

24 * (9+3) = 24 * 12 = 288

Answer : 288

Death is completely right :)

It would be 2 if the assignment was 48/(2(9+3)) :)

first u do (a+b) than U do all *or/ from left to right side
so 48/2(9+3)=48/2*12=24*12=288

@pancake yeah wanted to give other way of calculating it and yet another way with answer 288 because there is something to be said for both answers. The answer is ambiguous because the question is 'wrong'.

Vid out!

in word it is: 48 devided by 2 times the amount of 9 and 3.
NOT::::::::: 48 devided by 2 and this multiplied with the amount of 9 and 3.!!

=> the 2 belongs to the bracket, you can also write it:

48
2(9+3)

the result is: 2

NOT:
48 x (9+3)
2

result would be 288

and since there is the commutative law, you can change the positioning of numbers including the sign in front of the number which you want to reposition:

a x b = b x a

48 / 2 (9 + 3)
48 : 2 x (9 + 3) |:2
24 : (9 + 3)
24 : 12
2

 you fail at your own rules. First brackets, then operations from left to right, not like you say :D

wrong

if its 2(9+3) then it means its 2*(9+3), you just dont write that * there but it still exists.

* and / are equal so you need to do it from left to right after brackets ->

48/2*(9+3) = 48/2*12 = 288

PS: if it is 48/[2(9+3)] then the answer is 2.

Without big brackets the answer can be ONLY 288.

Anyone wants to argue more? I got 6 maths in 1 week.

this is competely wrong maths 8O

how can (9+3) |:2 still be (9+3) :?

48 : 2 * (9+3)
48 : 2 * 12 |:2
24 : 1 * 6
24 : 1 * 6
24 * 6
144

(9 + 3) =12
24 : 1= 24

beacuse of deviding it into 2, the answer is 2 times smaller
