Death wrote:You see the second sum you created as 1250: (5*(5+20)) but again .. the extra () arent in the original sum, you can have 2 different outcomes but then you will have to create 2 different sums , 1250/5*(5+20) and 1250/(5*(5+20))

sure, these () arent in the sum, but in my eyes its like: 2 x 3 + 5, you could add some () and it still would be the same, make no difference: (2 x 3) + 5

the same way i see:

1250 / 5(5+20) equal to 1250 / (5(5+20))

and i think in order to get to your outcome, you have to add brackets here:

(1250 / 5) x (5 + 20)

because in my eyes:

(1250 / 5) x (5 + 20) is not 1250 / 5(5+20)

but well, definatley interesting ;)

btw, who of the students is gonna ask his math teacher? :D

Im definitly going to do that lands :)
got maths tomorrow anyway so definitly going to do that xD

at your latest "action" xD ;:

the / and * mark are equal .. as i already mentioned before. Therefore adding extra brackets changes the sum

You first need to do (5+20) is 25 .. duhh :D

then it says 1250/5*25

You always go from left to right, and / and * are equal so you start with 1250/5 then you do it times 25.

so 1250/5 = 250
250*25 = 6250 ... :)

But ill ask my math teacher tomorrow.. see what he says :)

PS: Dont you just want to hurt the poeple that dont agree with you? :D

PS PS : maybe there is an easier solution.. like this one ;)

ya, i am interested in the math teachers version ;)

could you also ask him also whether theres a difference between

48 : 2(9+3)
and
48 : 2 * (9+3)

please?

thanks + good night.

I will :)

but i can tell you now that the thing we are learning in school is that if something is like this 5A or 5(1+2)

it means that between those things there stans an unwritten *

But ill have more info tomorrow XD

check this one weird maybe maths/time changes its meaning formerly was anserw 2 because multiplication rules were different than today So maybe that's why we have such differences in different versions of calculators and what we know but according to today's science anserw is 288 So you're too old lands:D but I'll wait for a response from Death
and here is physicforum page about this problem:D

AHAHAHA
The shitty trick is that notation of division (fraction) used on computer uses /. Usually you don't use horizontal fraction line on computer (unless u write in TeX or make mathematical formulas in MS Word/Open Office Writer). So it's just unclear.
MOROVER if you write something like this in some maths program (Matlab, Octave): 48/2(9+3), program won't 'swallow' it, because there is no operation specified between 2 and (9+3). You'll have to write 48/2*(9+3) (it's 288 then) or 48/2/(9+3)=48/(2*(9+3)) (it's 2 then).
So what I want to say is that author of this 'riddle' (probably on purpose) wrote it in a completely WRONG and UNCLEAR way, making this statement INVALID.
And this lets us to interprete it in our own way, therefore both 288 and 2 is right, however after doing certain assumptions.
It's also quite natural that some of you assume that 2(9+3) means 2*(9+3) and okay, than, following notation used on computer it would be 48/2*(9+3)=24*12=288.
Btw. if it was written on paper, it would be rather clear, cause the author would have to use horizontal fraction line, and (9+3) would be over, under or next to faction line and situation would bea clear (respectively: multiplication, division, multiplication).

That's all. It's not a 'magic trick', but just a act of mathematical ignorance.

I would make it so:

Yep the question would be first row or second: 48/2(9+3)

48/(2(9+3)) =..........|.........(48/2)(9+3)=

.....48............|...48
----------- =...|...---- * (9+3) =
...2 * 12........|....2

2 * 2 * 12......|......12 * 2 * 2
------------ =..|......--------- * 12 =
...2 * 12.......|...........2

....2.............|........12 * 2 * 2 * 12
....-- = 2......|.......--------------- =
....1.............|................2
______
..................................|..........12 * 12 * 2 = 288
............................................. ____________

oke I would divide 48 with 2 in any way cuz the sign is clearly writed...

Around sum thing i would put it below the dividing line if there is multiplicator betwen 2 and it. (as in first line with result 2) as I know no sing means multiplicator sign..

If (48/2) would be like this i would use second line with 288 result.

As Problem was not defined as in second row I preffer result of first row...

As i know / can always represent dividing line and no sign it can be only multiplicator... And also if u got multiplicator betwer 2 numbers you would take them toghether on te same side of dividing line :D

So ill Say it's 2 :D as I give my arguments..

Hmm....

Why not.... :D

 nice one. I can try writing it in TeX, or ask someone to use Mathematica because I suck with that program :P

Anyhow, the expression is written poorly, I can understand why Landser and other people think wrongly about it, but it really is 288 if it is written in this way.

Ill try my maths teachers too, Monday. And some fellow maths students ofc ^^

So it only the question of power...

Betwen / and *

And i think that they are equaly strong if they dont have any () stuff...

i asked my classmates, we had 30min discussion.
its 288 becuase * and / are equal. after brackets you start from beginning (left -> right)

right+1 actually / or * are equal but multiplication is commutative 2*3=3*2 but divide isn't 2/3 is not the same 3/2 so 48 must be divided by its divisor 2 not
2(9+3) its simple

Sooooo, asked my math teacher.. he agrees with me ;)

if it is written like this : 48/2(9+3) the outcome is 288
if it is written like : 48/(2(9+3)) the outcome is 2

and if it is written like :

48
---------------
2(9+3)

Then indeed the outcome is 2

But since it is written in the first form the outcome can only be 288!

end of discussion :)

In those cases 42 is the most exact answer. :P
